Alfre Woodard (Born: November 8, 1952 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is an American
film and television actress and film producer.
Alfre Woodard is the youngest of three children born to her parents in
Oklahoma. She was named by her godmother, who claimed she saw a vision of
Alfre's name written out in gold letters. A former high school cheerleader
and track star, she got the acting bug after being persuaded to audition for
her school play by a nun at her Bishop Kelley School.

She went on to study acting at Boston University and enjoyed a brief stint
on Broadway before moving to Los Angeles. She got her first big break in
Remember My Name (1978) which also starred Jeff Goldblum. For her role in
Cross Creek (1983) she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best
Supporting Actress. Woodard also appeared in television, including "L.A. Law"
and "Hill Street Blues"; both of the guest appearances won her Emmys. She
was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1993 for her performance as the nurse in
the critically praised film "Passion Fish" and also starred in "Bopha!" with
Danny Glover. Her biggest triumph so far occured in 1997 in the miniseries
"Miss Evers Boys" which earned her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors
Guild award, and a cableAce award. In 2004, she performed in the movie "Beauty
Shop" as Ms. Josephine. She lives in Santa Monica, California, with her
husband, writer Roderick Spencer, and their two adopted children. She was
named one of the Most Beautiful People in America by People Magazine. She is
currently portraying the role of Betty Applewhite on ABC's hit show
Desperate Housewives'. |
