Debelah Morgan (born September 29, 1977, Detroit, Michigan) is an American
R&B singer and songwriter. Morgan is a coloratura soprano and is credited as
having a three and a half octave vocal range, comparable to that of
Christina Aguilera’s (four-octave) - including the ability to sing high
notes in the whistle register.
Morgan has enjoyed sporadic success, peaking with her song Dance With Me.

Debelah was born to an Indian mother and an African-American father. She
started taking piano lessons at the age of 3. She also learned to sing in
many different languages besides English (French, Italian, German, Hindi,
and Portuguese.) Later she and her family moved to Arizona where she won
beauty pageants at the age of fifteen and organized a gospel choir in her
high school. She majored in Vocal Performance.
At the age of seventeen she signed to Atlantic Records and released her
debut album titled Debelah. This album is her rarest, having only been
released in the US and Japan, and even there it wasn't really promoted. Her
label dropped her after the release.
She signed to Motown and released her second album titled It's Not Over in
1998. Half of the tracks were co-written by her and some were co-written by
her brother Giloh. This album was not released worldwide, only in Europe and
Asia. Her songs I Love You and Yesterday were moderate hits. Motown was
bought by Universal, and they wanted Debelah to record an urban album.
Debelah left Universal because she saw the company as attempting to turn her
into another in a long line of similar black hip-hop artists. She wanted to
do a pop-r&b album to appeal to a wider audience.
In 1998 and 1999 Debelah was featured on three soundtrack albums ("Fame L.
A.," "Our Friend Martin" and "Stuart Little".) On the Our Friend Martin
soundtrack she sang a new song written by Diane Warren. The other
soundtracks featured songs from her It's Not Over album.
Debelah had to file for bankruptcy, but she did not give up her singing
career and began to work on a new album. All the tracks were written by her
and her brother. She presented the material to her first label Atlantic, who
signed her again (not remembering she was signed to them before). The album
called Dance With Me was released in 2000, and the title track, a tango
style song, became a world-wide hit, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard
Singles chart and gaining popularity all over the world. In Spain it was
also released with Spanish lyrics, titled Baila Conmigo. Debelah went on the
media circuit, promoting 'Dance with Me.'
In August 2001, Morgan released a second single called I Remember, which had
no chart success. No more singles were released and since that time, Morgan
has completely dropped off the radar. In 2003 her management company said
she was working on an album, due for release in late 2003. The album was
never released and Atlantic Records closed her official website without an
explanation. One of her songs from the Dance With Me album was featured on
the Spyder Games soundtrack, while a new Diane Warren ballad was on the
soundtrack for Osmosis Jones. |
