Drew Bledsoe is an American football quaterback for the Buffalo Bills.
Bledsoe was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1993 in the first round out of Washington State University. He set many passing records in his tenure there from 1993-2001. His biggest personal feat was completing an NFL record 45 passes out of 70 attempts in a 1994 game against the Minnesota Vikings. He would rally his squad from a 20-0 deficit to a 26-20 victory. That started a string of seven straight wins. He helped the Pats to a Super Bowl appearance in 1996 where they were crushed 35-21 by the Green Bay Packers. He helped New England win a second consectutive AFC East title in 1997 and led them to the AFC Divisional playoffs where they lost a heart breaker 7-6 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He led them to the playoffs in 1998 but they lost in the Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He would suffer non-playoff seasons the next two years.
In 2001, he signed a 10 year deal to stay with the Patriots. Unfortunately, he would suffer a devastating hit from New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis which caused internal bleeding. He would have to be content with backup Tom Brady at the helm. Brady led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl title ever when they shocked the heavily favored St. Louis Rams. However Bledsoe did shine for one crucial game in that run. In the AFC Championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Brady was blind-sided on a safety blitz, injuring the rookie who took Bledsoe's spot. Bledsoe came in and immediately looked sharp. He took a hit similar to the one that originally put him on the sidelines, but it would only knock the rustiness away. After completing his first two passes, Bledsoe hit David Patten for a 25 yard touchdown strike. Though his overall numbers weren't that pretty, he didn't turn the ball over and his efforts were enough to help the underdog Pats leap into the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, he wouldn't play in the Super Bowl, as Brady collected the MVP honors following the teams upset win over the Rams. Shortly after, head coach Bill Belichick traded him to Buffalo making him an arch nemesis against his former team because they are both in the same division. Bledsoe has done fairly well with the Bills, though his teams haven't been performing too well since he became their quarterback. Overall, Bledsoe has had up and downs but he is still renowned as a very talented player. |
