Drive-By Truckers are a rock/ alt-country band from Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Their music is characteristic due to their “three axe attack,” or three
guitars as well as bass and drums. Their lyrics often revolve around
drifters and criminals trying to survive in economically-depressed small
towns.
The band was co-founded by Patterson Hood, son of music producer David Hood,
and Mike Cooley in Athens, Georgia, in 1996. The two men had played in
various other bands including Adam's Housecat which was chosen "1st Place
Winner - Best Unsigned Band" by Musician's Magazine's contest in the late
'80's.

Together with a revolving group of musicians, the Drive-By Truckers put out
their first two albums, Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999).
The DBTs then hit the road on a nationwide tour, resulting in a live album,
Alabama Ass-Whuppin (released in 2000 by Second Heaven Records, re-released
in 2002 by Terminus Records).
After three years on the road a tight-knit group of musicians emerged. They
began work on their most ambitious project, 2001's Southern Rock Opera, a
double CD song cycle about the rise to stardom and deaths of the band Lynyrd
Skynyrd and what both meant to people growing up in the South at the time.
It won acclaim from fans and critics, being re-issued by Mercury/Lost
Highway Records the next year and getting Drive-By Truckers named Band of
the Year from No Depression Magazine.
The band has put out two albums since then, Decoration Day and The Dirty
South, and continue to play close to 200 shows a year. DBT's forthcoming CD,
tentatively titled A Curse and A Blessing, is scheduled to be released in
April of 2006. The cover art of the band’s last three albums were painted by
musician and artist Wes Freed.
Until the band begins touring behind the new CD, Patterson Hood is playing
dates and selling his solo release by New West Records Killers and Stars. |
