Eva La Rue Biography

A native Californian of Puerto Rican ancestry, Eva LaRue (sometimes billed as Eva LaRue Callahan) began her performing career at age six, singing jingles and appearing in television commercials for McDonald's and American Airlines, among others. She competed in and won several beauty pageants including Miss American Teenager. After appearing on "Star Search" in 1985, she abandoned singing and dancing for acting. Guest appearances in small roles on TV sitcoms and dramas followed before she landed co-hosting duties (with Dom DeLuise) on the syndicated, reality-based comedy "The New Candid Camera". Her film appearances run the gamut from her debut as a virgin in the sword-and-sorcery flick "The Barbarians" (1987) to a well-received portrayal of a heroin addict in "Critical Condition" (1990) to mostly forgettable teen comedies and sci-fi actioners (i.e., "Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College", "Legal Tender" both 1991).

In 1993, LaRue joined the cast of the ABC daytime drama "All My Children" as Latina neurologist Maria Santos, a sexy young woman coping with everything from racism to infertility. A popular performer with the fans, she ended up marrying her on-screen love interest John Callahan in 1996. The following years, LaRue netted a Daytime Emmy nomination for her role.

Like many in the soap opera industry, the actress yearned to stretch her talents and had one of her best opportunities when she was chosen to portray Annette Funicello from her teen years to her forties in the TV biopic "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (CBS, 1995). Much to the disappointment of viewers, LaRue left daytime behind in 1997 when she was tapped to be a regular on the short-lived UPN sitcom "Head Over Heels". Despite that show's demise, she has remained in demand as a guest performer, perhaps most notably with a recurring role on the NBC drama "Third Watch" beginning in 1999.
