Guillermo Ignacio Caņas (born November 25, 1977) is an Argentine
professional tennis player. He was born in Argentina's capital, Buenos
Aires, and named after Argentine tennis star Guillermo Vilas.
Willy Caņas started playing at age 7, and had an excellent youth start
reaching quarterfinal of Wimbledon in 1995. Also in 1995 he started playing
professionally.

In 2001, after a wrist injury in his right hand in the previous year, he
climbed from the 227th place in the ATP ranking to the 15th, for what he was
named ATP Comeback Player of Year 2001. His highest rank ever in singles was
8th (June 2005).
In 2002, Caņas won his first ATP Masters Series title in Toronto, defeating
Andy Roddick in the final.
He holds a record of 5 victories and 2 defeats (3:1 in singles) in Davis Cup
matches.
Doping
In June 2005 rumours spread that he was being investigated by the ATP for a
doping offence. The case was handled in secrecy. On August 8, 2005,
Guillermo was suspended for two years and forfeit $276,070 in prizes by the
ATP for the use of a diuretic called hydrochlorothiazide, a substance with
no benefits by itself but used to cover other forbidden substances. No
traces of any other forbidden substance were found in Caņas' sample, and the
player assures the diuretic was in a medicament for his throat ache given to
him by ATP doctors Mercader and Chinchila during the Acapulco tournament in
Mexico. If his appeal at the Swiss committee in Lausanne doesn't have a
different result, he will not be allowed to return to the tour until June
2007. Caņas has vowed to fight the ban, claiming he was innocent of the
charges against him.
