Jeff Gordon, NASCAR Winston Cups’ Rainbow Warrior was born on August 4, 1971 in Vallejo, California. This 5’7”, 150 lb racecar driver is a fan favorite among many and yet there are those (as with any driver), who don’t seem to care for him at all. Gordon though, more than most drivers, seems to be a driver that either a fan loves or that they hate, but certainly not one that any real race fan can be indifferent about.
As many Winston Cup drivers have done, Jeff Gordon got an early start with his racing career. Jeff was only 4 ˝ years old when he drove his first car, which was in the quarter midget class. He competed in this division until the age of 10 when he started racing go-karts, which he raced until the age of 13 when he made the move up to racing a Sprint car. There was much controversy about a child being allowed to race a Sprint car at such a young age but in the end, Gordon was given the go-ahead to race and he continued to show an amazing amount of talent.
Gordon continued to race in the Sprint division and in 1987 Jeff raced with the World of Outlaws before he went to USAC the following year. The next step Jeff Gordon made was the transition from racing on dirt to racing on pavement. 1991 found Jeff racing full time in the Busch Grand National Series. This move proved to be a good one for Jeff as he won the Rookie of the Year title his first year in the Grand National Series, thus showing car-owner Bill Davis that he also had made a wise decision in hiring Jeff to drive his car.
Gordon remained with Bill Davis until 1992 when he hooked up with current car-owner Rick Hendrick, and the rest they say, is history. Jeff won 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year honors and his first win came at Charlotte in the Coca Cola 600 during 1994. He also won the inaugural Brickyard 400, which is held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in August of the same year. Jeff Gordon, driving his #24 sponsored Dupont Chevrolet is teammate to both Jerry Nadeau and Terry Labonte.
Jeff is married to his wife, Brooke and though they have no children, they do have a very full life and a strong faith in God. Gordon is involved in a program, along with his car owner, Rick Hendrick and they work to raise money for their foundation which is called “The Hendrick Marrow Program”. This program helps to raise money to fight against Leukemia, paying for the DNA tests that are needed for volunteers to be added to the Registry and also in educating the public about the real need for bone marrow donors.
Love him or hate him, Jeff Gordon is a force to be reckoned with on the NASCAR Winston Cup Circuit. Though he is still a young driver, he has a proven track record that no one can deny. He has won 3 Winston Cup Championships for his current car owner and though 1999 was a seemingly off-season for Jeff and his Rainbow Warrior team, it would seem that as in many circumstances, we learn from our mistakes. Jeff Gordon, driver of the #24 Dupont Chevrolet, has won 49 races, all by the age of 28 with many more to come. |
