Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born in Martinez, California on November 25, 1914. He was one of nine children and his parents were Italian immigrants.
There was never a doubt that DiMaggio could hit a baseball. DiMaggio had quite a reputation as a sandlot ballplayer and at the age of 17, the San Francisco Seals signed him on as a shortstop. In 1933, DiMaggio's first full minor-league season, he had a hit in 61 consecutive games with the Seals. DiMaggio suffered a knee injury while entering a taxi in 1934 and had a number of Major League teams worried. William Earl Essick, a scout for the New York Yankees believed in DiMaggio's potential and as result the Yankees made a deal for DiMaggio for the 1936 season. In his last two seasons with the Seals in 1934 and 1935, DiMaggio's batting averages were .341 and .398 respectively.
In the spring of 1936, an elated New York Yankees club brought DiMaggio up for his first Major League season. That year he drove in 125 runs and assisted in bringing the Yankees another World Series Championship. DiMaggio's most famous record came during the 1941 season when he hit safely in 56 consecutive games. After his record-breaking streak was over, DiMaggio started a new hitting streak that lasted another 16 games before it came to and end. "The Yankee Clipper" had a good year in 1941 with a league leading 125 RBIs, 30 home runs and batting average of .351. He only struck out 13 times for the season as well.
DiMaggio's career as a Yankee was interrupted from 1943 to 1945 when he was drafted to serve in the Army during World War II. After the war in 1946, "Joltin' Joe" returned to the Yankees to hit 25 home runs and to knock in 99 runs in spite of an injury to his heel. After the 1948 season, DiMaggio checked into a hospital to have an operation on his troublesome heel and needed an additional surgery to eventually solve the problem.
On February 7, 1949, DiMaggio became the first baseball player ever to earn $100,000.
DiMaggio's long list of injuries finally caught up with him during the 1951 season and he decided to call it quits at age 37. In the 13 years that DiMaggio played for the New York Yankees, between 1936 and 1951, the Yankees won 10 American League Pennants and 10 World Series Championships. DiMaggio also received Most Valuable Player awards in 1939, 1941, and 1947. He was also selected to the American League's All-Star team in each of the 13 seasons he played in the Major League.
DiMaggio was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. He had a reputation that will forever be remembered and he was acclaimed in movies, books, poems, and songs. DiMaggio was married to Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe and will also be fondly remembered as the "Mr. Coffee" spokesman.
Joe DiMaggio died on March 8, 1999 in Hollywood, Florida and is buried at Holy Cross in Colma, California. |
