Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (born April 16, 1947) was a successful high school, collegiate, and professional basketball player. Born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor (usually known as Lew Alcindor) in New York City, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a center who grew to seven feet 3 inches (2.21 m) tall. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led Power Memorial Academy to three straight New York City Catholic championships and a 71-game winning streak. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played for UCLA from 1967 - 1969. During his time on the team, UCLA lost only 2 games. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the number 1 1969 NBA draft pick. After graduating from UCLA, he played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers. While at UCLA Kareem Abdul-Jabbar converted to Islam. He took his Arabic name in 1971.
At UCLA, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar suffered a scratched left eyeball; from then on, he mostly played wearing goggles.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was famous for his sky hook shot, which was notoriously hard to defend against. He was also notable for his physical fitness regimen.
