Steve Park came from the NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Tour where he had 15 wins, 22 poles and won the Most Popular Driver
award in 1995. He's also won two NASCAR Busch North Series races in only
nine starts. He won his first Modified race in 1988, then earned five
victories in 1989, all in his own equipment and with his own team. He then
sold his Modified equipment and acquired a third-hand NASCAR Busch Series
car.
A blown engine at New Hampshire signaled the end of the unsponsored NASCAR
Busch Series venture. The rideless Park started going to the track to help
on his father's car. Modified owner Curt Chase noticed the younger Park
hanging out in the pits and asked him to drive his car. After spending 1991
and 1992 with Chase, Park moved to TG Racing, where he won 14 times in two
years. In 1995, Park posted seven victories with Sheba Racing and five the
following year. He also competed in 11 races in the NASCAR Busch North
Series in 1996, taking the checkers first at Nazareth and New Hampshire.
Park's big breakthrough came at Watkins Glen International in 1996, when Joe
Nemechek asked the youngster to qualify his truck. He put the truck on the
pole, and some heads in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series garage turned. Dale
Earnhardt noticed the talent Steve Park had and hired him to drive a the No.
3 Chevrolet owned by Dale and Teresa Earnhardt in 1997. It marked Park's
first full year in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division, and he
made an incredible impact. The native of New York State had the best season
ever for a NASCAR Busch Series rookie. He racked up three wins, 20 top-10
finishes, and nearly $700,000 in prize money. He ran away with the Raybestos
Rookie of the Year award.
Park began his rookie year in the Winston Cup Series in 1998, he was a
favorite in the 1998 Raybestos Rookie of the Year race until injuries he
suffered in an accident during practice at Atlanta in March sidelined him
for several months. Park finished 42nd overall in the driver standings in
'98, but thanks to some nice fill-in work by three-time series champion
Darrell Waltrip, the No. 1 Chevrolet placed a respectable 28th in owner
points -- one spot ahead of the No. 28, driven by Raybestos Rookie of the
Year Kenny Irwin.
Park entered the 1999 season with just 17 races under his belt, but in those
starts he showed some real promise. He placed 11th twice, including once at
notoriously tough Dover Downs International Speedway. He also rebounded
nicely at Atlanta in the season's final race, starting and finishing 17th.
Steve Park had a much improved season in 2000, he scored his first Winston
Cup victory and his best finish in the point standings, 11th. He finished
the season with three top-10s in the last four races. He scored four top-5
finishes over a stretch of seven races, beginning with the Watkins Glen
victory. He returns for the 2001 season with crew chief Paul Andrews, who
engineered six top-5 and 13 top-10 finishes in 2000, as well as the first
two Winston Cup poles of Park's career. |
